Introducing My Art Style

I did it. After over a year of trial and error and frustration I finally nailed my art style. Turns out I like drawing interiors. And turns out it’s actually a viable art style pursued by many artists. Over the past few weeks I’ve been exploring interior art pieces and discovered so many amazing ones. And not just from the ‘old masters’ but from living artists. One of my favorites is a Korean artist who is a master at using just four or five primary colors to style his pieces. I’ve been studying his works to learn how to approach my own pieces with fewer colors.

I’m so happy I don’t have to give up drawing interiors to draw doodles. I enjoy them so much. My love for interiors actually goes back to my childhood. When I was a kid I used to keep a small hardback journal of clippings from magazines and sale papers of homes and bedrooms that I thought were cool or pretty. I even had a subscription to House Beautiful for a short time in high school (or young adulthood hood. I can’t remember the time but I remember I had them!) Over time I forgot about my interests as adult life took over but here I am, all these years later, with memories from the past showing me how my art has always been influenced by my childhood interests. It’s pretty amazing when you think about it.

I’m also glad I don’t have to do doodle collages anymore. I like doodle collages but I’ve never really enjoyed drawing them. But drawing interiors is a different story. I simply love them. I get the same thrill I experienced as a kid when I was cutting and pasting all those beautiful homes and interiors in my little journal.

Now I just need to perfect my craft. A good example is this newest piece, which is untitled (I’ll work on naming them later). I loved everything about it (still gotta work on my perspective) except for that stupid shadow. It ruined the whole piece. My daughter looked at it and asked “what’s that?” (facepalm) and I had to explain to her it was supposed to be a shadow. The art world is always pushing shading and shadows. I actually like shading. I’m not good at it but I’m enjoying the results I see when I try, but so far I’m hating shadows. Tremendously. I don’t intend to use any in my next few pieces but I will keep working on shading. Maybe once I feel confident with shading I can focus on shadows.

I will continue to do sticker slaps because I enjoy them, especially the freedom of doing whatever I want with mistakes (which is good practice) but I will only post them on my instagram. And with that I’m off to continue working on my latest piece, which is shaping up nicely.

Until next time.
