As you can see this is not a mini doodle. It’s what’s known as a sticker slap and has a long history in the world of graffiti. Until I started doing art, I didn’t know what a sticker slap was. I had seen them stuck to mailboxes and utility poles and admired how cool they looked but wasn’t aware of their significance. I simply wondered why people were drawing on mailing labels and sticking them everywhere? Once I learned more about the history of the label in street art I was interested in making a sticker slap of my own for fun,
But I wasn’t in a hurry to do so and stuck the idea in the back of my mind for several months, until recently. One day at work I found a handful of blank label 228’s (their official name) in a junk bin. I took one home and tried my hand at a sticker slap. The result is what you see here.
I didn’t go in with a plan. I just did a raw doodle. No references, no vision. I even pulled out my abandoned Ohuhu markers and gave the slap some color. I was blown away by the results. It was imperfectly perfect. And I enjoyed every minute of its creation. So much so that at the time of this post, I am putting the finishing touches on my next sticker slap. Now what this means for the direction of my art I don’t know. I choose not to think too deeply about it. The beauty of this journey is that I’m free to do whatever I want, so if I want to take a detour and try something new like sticker slaps, then that’s perfectly fine with me. Stay tuned!
