Presenting mini doodle #4.
I loved the way it turned out. And if you’re new here you should know that’s a rare thing for me to say. I’m usually disappointed in everything I make, but not this one. Yes, it has the usual mistakes and issues but I’m pleased with the overall outcome. This is also the second drawing I’ve done without using a grid for guidance. I barely used a perspective point if I’m being honest. I used the point for some parts of it, but 70% of it was done by simply eyeballing it. My biggest struggle with this drawing were the doodles themselves, but not drawing them. No, the biggest problem was creating texture for each doodle. I find that they stand out more when they have patterns and texture versus just being blobs of white with smiley faces, but my ink and pen game is kinda low. But I’m working on it. I’ve set a challenge to observe the patterns I see around me in everyday life and practice drawing them. My goal is to make sure that every doodle I draw includes some pattern or texture to give them life.
Another goal I want to achieve is using more shadow and shading in my work. I’m still greatly intimidated by these techniques. It’s one of the rare times when I wish I could attend an art class and be taught how to do this. But since that’s not possible right now my only option is to try to learn on my own. I’ve recently made a rule that at least one piece in my drawing will always include shading and shadows. This drawing was the first time I put that rule into effect. If you look closely at my lady Dood, you can see that she not only has a shadow underneath her, but also shading on her legs and shoulders! I’m still stunned at how well she turned out. I probably could’ve done more, but I think it’s pretty good for my first try. I mean, it looks good to my eyes. And I was so nervous about messing it up! One thing I’d like to mention is that I remember seeing a tip online about not using black to create shadows and shading and I’m glad I took that advice. I think it turned out great as a result.
