Acrylics Meets Sketchbook

I always knew I would add color to my doodles at some point. Since most of my drawings are done in my sketchbook, and I was drawing on both sides of the paper, I was hesitant to try things like alcohol markers and paint. I bought my sketchbook from Target and couldn’t remember what it was capable of.

Eventually I got tired of worrying and decided it was time to give it a try. I first tried with my Ohuhu alcohol markers. Not surprisingly it bled through the paper, but luckily the drawing on the subsequent page was not good.

Although I was happy with the markers (I’m still in love with the blue background!) I ultimately decided that alcohol markers were not the right fit for me. I love markers for coloring books, but I didn’t feel it matched what I was hoping to do with my drawings (and I’m still trying to figure out what that is!).

Next came paint. I love painting. I loved painting since I was a child. My daughter and I do lots of crafts using paint and we have too many craft kit paint pots to prove it! So out came the paint. I decided to try with a doodle I was dying to see in color – my first drawing referenced from my own life!

My cat Charlie snuggling with me on a cold morning.

Some pink and black later and voila! I had painted my first sketchbook drawing!

Needless to say I was hooked! And that pink looks so freaking delicious! And that’s saying a lot from a girl who always hated pink growing up! With the painting of this doodle, everything changed with how I manage my sketchbook. Now I only draw on one side of the page, and paint is a permanent stable with my work. And since my sketchbook is used for practicing drawing, I’m excited to add painting to this process!

(Full disclosure: the pink posca pen was not used in the painting. I don’t know why I included it in the photo, but I used standard acrylic paint from a bottle!)
